1) Professoressa partiamo dal suo curriculum: Università di Santa Cruz Master e Dottorato a Stanford. Come coniuga i suoi studi di letteratura italiana e cinema con la C.G.?

Il mio interesse è sempre stato diretto al mondo del cinema nel suo insieme e, prendendo in considerazione il cinema contemporaneo, non si può prescindere dalla conoscenza della grafica digitale. Più in generale, le nuove tecnologie hanno dato una svolta epocale alla visione del cinema, e studiare nel dettaglio le innovazioni più all’avanguardia è la sfida più stimolante per me, come lo è portare in Italia i più grandi nomi in questo settore e permettere agli artisti di casa nostra di aggiornarsi.

1) We start from your curriculum: University of Santa Cruz Master and PhD at Stanford. How do you combine your studies of Italian literature and cinema with the C.G.?

My interest has always been directed to the film world as a whole and about the contemporary cinema, one can not ignore the knowledge of digital graphics. More generally, new technologies have made a quantum shift in the vision of the film, and the study in detail of the most advanced innovations is my most exciting challenge, as it is to bring in Italy the biggest names in this sector and allows our artists to update.

2) Da cosa nasce l'idea di portare a Torino la VIEW Conference che negli anni si rivela uno dei punti di incontro centrali del panorama grafico internazionale?

Come già ho accennato prima, è per me una grande soddisfazione riuscire a far conoscere al pubblico italiano ed europeo i più importanti nomi del mondo nell’ambito della tecnologia digitale. E’ naturale che VIEW Conference e VIEWFest si tengano a Torino , la città dove è nato il cinema in Italia, dove ha sede una delle più attive Film Commission italiane, nonché il Museo del Cinema. Con queste premesse, due eventi come VIEW Conference e VIEWFest non potevano nascere che a Torino. La scommessa per me è proprio quella di riuscire a mantenerli in questa città.

2) How does the idea of bringing the VIEW Conference in Turin - which over the years reveals a central meeting points of view of international graphic - start?

As I mentioned before, it gives me great satisfaction to be able to make the public aware of the most important Italian and European names in the world of digital technology. The natural setting og VIEW Conference and VIEWFest is Turin, the city where cinema in Italy was born, the country of one of the most active Italian Film Commission and the Museum of Cinema. With these premises, two events as VIEW Conference and VIEWFest can be born anly in Turin. The challenge for me is precisely to be able to keep them in this city.

3) Secondo lei, quale sarà in futuro l'apporto della nuova tecnologia 3D alla C.G.?

La tecnologia 3D ha provocato anche nell’ambito della grafica digitale, così come in quello dell’animazione, del cinema e in tutti i suoi innumerevoli campi di applicazione, una rivoluzione senza precedenti. Credo che il futuro della grafica digitale sia tutto nella nuova tecnologia 3D, che avrà un ruolo sempre più centrale, come abbiamo il modo di constatare dai talk delle personalità più importanti che vengono ogni anno a VIEW Conference.

3) In your opinion, what will be in the future the contribution of new technology to the 3D C.G.?

Technology has also produced in the 3D computer graphics, as well as in animation, film, and in all its many fields of application, an unprecedented revolution. I believe the future of digital graphics is all in the new 3D technology, which will have an increasingly central role, as we can see from the talk of the most important personalities that each year are at VIEW Conference.

4) Ci parli un po’ del successo di pubblico della VIEW Conference che aumenta ad ogni edizione. Crediamo che ciò le faccia piacere a livello personale e professionale, ma quel è il segreto di questo successo dal  punto di vista culturale ?

Il segreto del successo di VIEW Conference è quello di mantenere sempre altissimo il livello degli ospiti, che vengono a Torino a tenere workshop che sono sempre all’avanguardia. Non è sempre facile oggi poter offrire al pubblico lezioni tenute dai più grandi guru al mondo e portare in un solo evento i nomi che sono il simbolo dell’innovazione. Un altro punto di forza di VIEW Conference consiste nell’avere salde collaborazioni con le più importanti conferenze al mondo in ambito di grafica digitale, primo tra tutti il SIGGRAPH, e con i festival d’animazione più noti, come il Festival d’Animacion d’Annecy.

4) Tell us about the VIEW Conference success of audience that increases each year. We believe that this will both personally and professionally please to you, but what is the secret of this success from the cultural point of view?

The secret of success of VIEW Conference is to always maintain the highest level of the guests, who come to Turin to hold workshops that are on the cutting edge. It is not always easy today to offer to the public lectures given by top gurus in the world and to bring in a single event names that are the symbol of innovation. Another strong point of VIEW Conference is to have strong partnerships with the world's leading conferences in the field of computer graphics, first of all the SIGGRAPH, and the most famous animation festivals such as Festival of Animacion 'Annecy.

5) Parliamo un po’ della difficoltà di organizzare un festival internazionale. Ha trovato terreno fertile nella città di Torino? E' stata supportata dalle  istituzioni? Quali e quante resistenze ha incontrato?

Certo non è semplice organizzare una conferenza internazionale di questo livello , che porti in Italia personalità del calibro di Tim Johnson, di Michael Giachino, di Paul Franklin, di Brad Lewis o di Will Wright, tutti ospiti di VIEW nelle ultime edizioni. Come già anticipato, è quasi scontato che VIEW si tenga a Torino, una città ricca di know-how e di un ambiente che ha permesso la nascita di eccellenze nel settore, come Enarmonia e Seac02.  Le istituzioni locali, dalla Regione Piemonte, alla Provincia di Torino, alla Città di Torino, alla Compagnia di San Paolo, la Fondazione CRT e la Camera di Commercio di Torino fin dall’inizio hanno capito l’importanza di un’iniziativa come VIEW e continuano a darci il loro fondamentale sostegno. Anche il nostro pubblico, affezionato e sempre più numeroso, è un grande stimolo per offrire sempre un servizio sempre migliore ogni anno.

5) Let's talk about the difficulty in the organization of an international festival. Did you find fertile ground in the city of Turin? Did you find a support by the institutions? What and how much resistance did you met?

Certainly it is not easy to organize an international conference of this level, leading in Italy names suche as Tim Johnson, Michael Giachino, Paul Franklin, Brad Lewis or Will Wright, all guests in the latest editions of VIEW. As already mentioned, it is almost assumed that VIEW is being held in Turin, a city full of know-how and an environment that has allowed the creation of excellence in the industry as Enarmonia and Seac02. Local institutions, from the Region, the Province of Turin, the city of Turin, to the Compagnia di San Paolo, the Fondazione CRT and the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, from the beginning understood the importance of an initiative such as VIEW and they continue to give us their fundamental support. Even our audience, devote and ever more numerous, is a great incentive to offer a better service each year.

6) Può raccontarci un aneddoto divertente capitato magari nelle passate edizioni a qualche ospite Vip?

Ogni anno ci sono sempre molte situazioni divertenti, e anche l’atmosfera familiare che si respira a VIEW fa si che gli artisti siano sempre lieti di tornare. Ho potuto da sempre constatare una grande semplicità e cordialità dei grandi nomi che ospitiamo ogni anno, che si dimostrano sempre molto disponibili con noi organizzatori e soprattutto con il pubblico e con i bambini; per dirlo in due parole, sono persone alla mano! Solo un esempio: Tim Johnson, il regista di Kung Fu Panda, durante la proiezione e il workshop per le scuole, si è fermato a firmare gli autografi per tutti i bambini che lo chiedevano, e addirittura ha firmato un gesso di una ragazzina, come se fosse un amico. Vi mando anche la foto che testimonia questo momento!

6) Can you tell a funny story happened in past years maybe to a VIP guest?

Each year there are always lots of funny situations, and even the familiar atmosphere that reigns at VIEW allows artists to be happy to come back. I could always find a great warmth and simplicity in great names that we host every year, which are always available to show us their helpfulness especially with the public and with children, to put it in two words, are helpful ! Just one example: Tim Johnson, the director of Kung Fu Panda, during the screening and workshops for schools, he stopped to sign autographs for all the children who asked for it, and even signed a plaster cast of a young girl, as if they were friends. I’ll also send the photo that shows this moment!

7) Ha già qualche anteprima per l'edizione 2011 che qui può svelare o é ancora tutto top secret? Anche una piccola anticipazione sarebbe gradita ai lettori di 3DAGAIN.

Posso fare qualche piccola anticipazione per il lettori di 3DAGAIN. Hanno già confermato la loro presenza Jay Shuster, concept designer della Pixar Animation Studios per “Cars 2” e Lucia Modesto della PDI-Dreamworks, con alle spalle l’esperienza di responsabile dell’animazione dei personaggi della saga di “Shrek” e dei recenti “Megamind” e “Kung Fu Panda 2”.  La “dea della luce”, Sharon Calahan, direttrice della fotografia della Pixar per capolavori come “Ratatouille” e “Cars 2”, terrà un workshop su “L’arte di vedere”. Da Autodesk verrà Tom Wujec, vincitore di un premio Oscar e divulgatore scientifico di fama internazionale, che vanta l’esperienza di essere stato più volte keynote a TED e, sempre da Autodesk, avremo come ospite Carlos Olguin, famoso designer. Anche il premio Oscar Glenn Entis, co-fondatore di PDI (oggi Dreamworks Animation), la casa produttrice di Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Shark Tale e Madagascar, ha già dato la sua disponibilità. Per quanto riguarda la sezione dedicata al medical imaging, da IRCAD, Isitituto di Ricerca rinomato e livello mondiale, arriverà il prof. Luc Soler, direttore di Ricerca e Sviluppo del team che si occupa di chirurgia supportata dall’uso della tecnologia. Questo per dire solo alcuni dei moltissimi grandi nomi previsti per l’edizione 2011. Per rimanere aggiornati su tutte le novità visitate il nostro sito www.viewconference.it . 7) Do you have some previews for the 2011 edition, which you can reveal or is there still all top secret? Even a newscast would be welcomed by readers 3DAGAIN.

I can do some small previews for the readers of 3DAGAIN. Some great name have already confirmed their presence, such as Jay Shuster, concept designer of Pixar Animation Studios for "Cars 2" and the PDI-Dreamworks Lucia Modesto, backed by the experience as head of character animation in the saga of "Shrek" and the recent "Megamind" and "Kung Fu Panda 2." The "Goddess of Light", Sharon Calahan, director of photography for Pixar masterpieces like "Ratatouille" and "Cars 2" will hold a workshop on "The art of seeing." From Autodesk we will have Wujec Tom, winner of an Academy Award-winning and internationally acclaimed science writer, who has been the experience of being repeatedly keynote at TED, and increasingly from Autodesk, we will have as guest Carlos Olguin, a famous designer. The Oscar winner Glenn Entis, co-founder of PDI (now DreamWorks Animation), the maker of Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Shark Tale and Madagascar, has already given its availability. As for the section dedicated to medical imaging, from IRCAD, Research Institute and famous worldwide, we will have prof. Luc Soler, Director of Research and Development of the team in charge of surgery supported by the use of technology. That is to say just a few of the many big names expected for the 2011 edition.
